Bratwurst and kimchi and baba ganoush...oh my!

First of all...

Happy Independence Day!

Cue the fireworks display

Cue Lee Greenwood "God Bless the USA"

We were extended a warm invitation to attend a barbecue at my sister-in-law's new house for the Fourth. The subject of the email read "Celebrate the Fourth with a little kimchi". This wasn't a big surprise, as the entire Lee family was invited. However, along with our Lee family, was Song Kyong's (my sister-in-law) husband's family...also the Lee family (not Korean).

This barbecue wasn't your typical hot dog and hamburger grill out. Along with bratwurst and the more exotic chicken/apple/maple syrup bratwurst, we found orzo salad, mahi mahi, hummas, pita, baba ganoush, kimchi, kimbap, sauerkraut, red cabbage salad, and pickled garlic. Dessert was strawberry rhubarb pie, watermelon, and Dairy Queen Dilly Bars. Korean was spoken, as well as English, and English with a British accent. The evening was a wonderful mix of culture, all placed together in Song Kyong and Rob's red, white and blue (seriously) house. It was a pretty neat symbol of the diversity of this great nation.

(Cue Mr. Neil Diamond singing "They're Comin' to America")

As the sentimental part of me relishes in the sybolism of the nation that I experienced, my stomach is now reminding me that when it comes to food..."East meets Midwest meets Middle East" have no place being united together in my tummy!

Ugh...

How do you spell relief again???
